THE year 2017 was one of China's most successful years in Fiji, says Chinese embassy economic and commercial counsellor Li Zhi.

While speaking at the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Business Forum, she said the year marked a fruitful term for bilateral economic and trade co-operation between China and Fiji.

"In May, Prime Minister Bainimarama attended the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation and had a very successful meeting with President Xi Jinping, intersecting new impetus to the strategic partnership of mutual respect and common development between China and Fiji," she said.

"In 2017, the bilateral trade reached $US386 million ($F780m).

"China is a major source of foreign investment to Fiji. Some Chinese projects such as Nalagi Hotel are completed and started to promote Fiji's economic development.

"The number of Chinese tourists reached 48,796, which makes China the fourth largest tourist source country in Fiji."

She said the business connection between the two countries had never been closer.

"More than 200 Fijian businessmen went to China for the Canton Fair last year.

"The continuous economic and trade co-operation between our two countries has brought tangible benefits to the people."
