MISSING relief items, no records of item movements, leaking roofs causing damage to supplies were some of the problems faced by DISMAC officials in the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Evan in 2012.

Assistant Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, National Disaster Management and Meteorological Services, Joeli Cawaki said this would soon be a thing of the past with the opening of a new storage yard funded by the New Zealand High Commission.

"From the lessons learnt after TC Evan, it was pointed out that there was an urgent need for a major renovation of the yard," he said.

"The warehouse and the old office were all in a pathetic state and had continued to deteriorate over time.

"It was not delivering the quality delivery of services that we would like to have.

"The roofs were leaking and floors were damaged and the old warehouse was dark and damp with improper lighting, and this impacted on the relief items that were brought in for distribution.

"The state of the old warehouse contributed to damage of the stores.

"Misplaced items and missing stores or no records of stores movement was also an issue.

"There were a lot of problems with our old warehouse.

"Then came the scope and design of a totally new yard which was done by engineers and quantity survivors.

"The first phase of the project would ensure that the yard was up to the standard that would be able to deliver the logistics support that the office of the Commissioner Western requires."

He said they were grateful to the New Zealand High Commission for supporting the first phase of the work and for providing $582,990.

"They provided the funding for the repair, renovation and inclusion of a logistics building and a new warehouse which cost $390,990."
