Road breakdowns

Simon Hazelman, Savusavu
Monday, March 05, 2018

As a frequent user of the Savusavu-Dreketi highway, it's now a common sight to see broken down trucks abandoned on our highways for days on end.

First of all, it's become obvious that many truck owners aren't maintaining their vehicles to the required standards. If vehicles are serviced as they should be, there shouldn't be breakdowns.

Secondly, why isn't LTA or the police doing anything about it? Although I pass them regularly enough along the same highway, the authorities seem to be turning a blind eye towards the issue.

The other day I counted six dilapidated trucks all parked in a dangerous fashion along the highway. One particular truck which was left in the middle of the lane for several days now was burnt out so bad that the heat from the inferno actually melted the sealed road. What is the deal here? Are we waiting for another fatal accident to happen before we do something?

Not only are these vehicles a danger to other traffic and more so at night, but they should not be allowed to remain on the road for more than a few hours at most.

A worrying trend indeed!
