Gunning for change

FORMER deputy Suva Mayor Jiosefa Gavidi is walking into the political arena this year with the well-wishes of his family.

"The support from the family is 100 per cent. Some of my brothers, they have called in to pledge their support," he said.

Mr Gavidi was announced as one of 10 provisional candidates during the second batch announcement for the National Federation Party on Friday.

His young brother and Republic of Fiji Military Forces commander Rear Admiral Viliame Naupoto also contested the 2014 General Election under the FijiFirst Party, but failed to meet the required votes to get into Parliament.

Mr Gavidi said his brother was the first person he had to break the news to that he was venturing into politics.

"I went to him and said I was contesting the election and he said congratulations and wished me all the best," he said.

Mr Gavidi, who is also a former teacher, hopes to focus on improving rural schools and housing standards for every Fijian.

"When we go far inland we can see the deterioration of housing quality that they have, some of them still have bamboo thatched houses and I want to make their living better," he said.

"Also when we go inland the standards of schools deteriorate further."
