COMMUTERS along the Labasa-Savusavu highway are expected to have better and safer travelling experiences after Fulton Hogan Hiways (FHH) completed major rehabilitation work along the Transinsular Rd in Savusavu.

A statement from FHH's construction manager, Scott Wilkinson said rehabilitation work on deteriorated sections of the Transinsular Rd in Savusavu was completed last week.

Mr Wilkinson said sections of the road needed P1 structural repair.

"This is when the road fails and it is posing a risk to road users," he said.

"Some vehicles are forced to use other lanes just to avoid potholes, which was dangerous."

"Motorists will now have a smooth and enjoyable ride more importantly it will be now safer than before.

"The crews, each made up of 16 men, have removed the deteriorated material from the road and stabilised both the sites with cement."

Mr Wilkinson said they had also removed shoulders on the side of the road to allow the flow of water away from the road.

"The road has been affected by years and years of normal wear and tear and also overloading," he said.

"Both have caused the deterioration of the road, making it impossible for motorists to avoid the numerous potholes."

Regular commuter Katalina Tuisaru said the area became dangerous during wet weather.

Ms Tuisaru said people's lives were in danger during wet weather before the rehabilitation was completed.

FHH is contracted by Fiji Roads Authority to maintain the unsealed and sealed road networks in the Northern Division.
