'Survival chance low'

NO one would have survived the crash of the Cessna 172 aircraft at Delaikoro on Vanua Levu last Monday afternoon, says independent investigator Andrew McGregor.

After visiting the crash site last Friday, Mr McGregor made this conclusion from initial assessment made of the wreckage.

Although he could not get down to the site because of bad weather, Mr McGregor carried out his assessment from a helicopter.

"It was highly unlikely based on the information also made available to me and no one could have survived such a crash," he said.

"There were also extremely high impact forces involved.

"The weather has been very bad as well making it difficult for us to do our work and I don't know at this stage how long will investigations take," Mr McGregor said.

On rescue operations, Mr McGregor said Fiji already had some capabilities to cater for such accidents.

Pacific Flying School trainee pilot Merelesita Lutu and instructor Iliesa Tawalo died at the site after the plane crashed into the mountain range of Delaikoro.

Families of the two arrived in Labasa last Friday morning to identify the bodies before pathologists carried out post-mortem examinations.
