2018 USA 7s: Fiji downs NZ in nail-biting quarters

Update: 2:39PM THE Fiji Airways national 7s side came from a 10-7 defeat to down New Zealand 14-10 in a nail-biting Las Vegas 7s quarter-final at Sam Boyd Stadium.

Skipper Jerry Tuwai led by example and scored the winning try after the full-time siren had sounded to secure his team a spot in the semi-final tomorrow.

Coach Gareth Baber said the boys never lost hope as they continued to fight until the last whistle.

He said the game was physical and although the boys committed few basic moves, they managed to hang on and won the game.

"We didn't get everything right and there was a lot of physicality in the game," Baber said.

"But we had the opportunity to capitalise and win the game.

"It's just 14 minutes and it doesn't matter when you score them, you got to score a winning try and that was the last play that won us the game."

He thanked the boys for the fighting spirit as they prepared to face host USA in the semi-final.

Playmaker Vatemo Ravouvou scored the opening try and later converted.

All Blacks hit back with two unconverted tries to Vilimoni Koroi and Sione Molia before Tuwai scored the winner.
