2018 USA 7s: Kenya loss wake-up call for Fiji

Maciu Malo in Las Vegas
Sunday, March 04, 2018

Update: 12:03PM FIJI Airways national 7s team's 17-14 loss to Kenya was a timely wake-up call for the Fijians before tackling New Zealand in the Las Vegas 7s quarter-final later this afternoon.

The Kenyans who earlier predicted a win against the Fijians before the commencement of the tournament exposed Fiji's weaknesses, shutting down the playmakers and dominated the ruck areas.

Basic mistakes proved costly for the Fijians as their oppositions denied them possession to narrowly win the game.

Fiji coach Gareth Baber said the side failed to take its chances allowing Kenya to dominate the ruck areas and possession.

He said the loss should inspire the boys to bounce back in the quarter-final.

"We took the ball in the contact area two or three times in this pitch and they (Kenyans) threw numbers in and got the ball back and that is a key possession for them," said Baber.

"We are going to make sure we don't use this to disturb the momentum that we gained in the first two but that is the reality of the contact area.

"Probably we didn't have that in the first two games and we need to focus for the rest of the tournaments."

He said the boys were hurt and needed to rise and bounce back in the do-or-die quarter-final.

"When you hurt you will come back to fight and that is good smack in the bottom for us to make sure we need to be in a position we need to be going forward," Baber added.

Fiji's tries were scored by Paula Dranisinukula and Alasio Naduva with conversions from  Amenoni Nasilasila and Vatemo Ravouvou, respectively. Kenya scored three tries to Andrew Amonde, Collins Injera, and Willy Ambaka.
