Increase in accidents

Varitema Tuvuki,Usp, Suva

I would like to draw the attention of the concerned authorities through this column to a very important matter which affects all of us.

The news concerning road accidents are increasing day by day.

Speaking during an interview on the news segment of a television police spokeperson about an accident at the Nadi bus station, she said: "It is alleged the driver lost contol of the bus due to brake failure."

I strongly urge the bus company and concerned authorities to lift their standard.

There are just far too many bus-related mechanical problems on our roads.

It is a ticking time-bomb threatening many innocent lives.

Can I ask the authorities, bus owners, bus drivers and mechanics to please be vigilant in ensuring vehicles are safe to be used on our roads?

It is high time the authorities took a serious view of the lapses which lead to these sorts of accidents. This can be done only by levying heavy fines and the forfeiture of their licences.

Licences, too, should be checked frequently.

It is quite disappointing that despite several efforts and campaigns to improve road safety awareness, accidents continue to occur.

I shall be grateful if you kindly give publicity to this matter so the traffic authorities wake up to the need of security of the people and take strong measures against those who err.
