Fiji's style

Maciu Malo In Las Vegas

THE off-loading game that used to win games for the Fiji 7s team in the past is slowly coming back as displayed by the Fiji Airways Fiji 7s team at the first day of the USA 7s in Las Vegas yesterday.

The one-handed pass and the scissors passing were again showcased against France in the second pool game that separated the two teams.

While the French boys managed to counter the Fijians physically, it was the off-loading game and the scissors passing that benefited the South Seas islanders scoring 12 points in the spell for a slender 12-5 halftime lead.

Head coach Gareth Baber said he was impressed with the off-loading games displayed by his troops not to mention their bravery in the face to face physical confrontation.

"Our off-loading game is certainly working at the moment," he said.

"We dropped a few in the first game but in the second game we managed to get through the tackles and off-load and Sevu executed that well. The big part is the work ethics of these players to take those passes — we have talked a lot about that which is part of our mental approach to risk in throwing everything you got at the opposition and we handled that well today."

He said the narrow pitch at Sam Boyd Stadium would best test all teams and he was confident of another outstanding display by his 7s warriors.

"All will try and match up physically against each other on the pitch like this. My message for the boys is to work on those efforts once again and grow in the quarter-final and the semi-final which is going to be a tough battle.

"The conditioning and fatigue and the power that you have back at training in the gym and other training environment before these games will work well here and whoever win those tough face to face battles will come through," he added.

Fiji will face Kenya in its last pool game and a possible quarter-final clash against New Zealand in the main cup.

South Africa is the defending champion in Las Vegas.
