MAN of the moment Eroni Sau stamped his mark early in the competition, scoring a brace of tries to help the Fiji Airways Fiji 7s team thump Russia 38-0 in the Las Vegas 7s opening pool game yesterday.

The Marou villager from Naviti, Yasawa, is living up to his new name 'Sledgehammer' scoring an individual try in the fifth minute of the first spell after fending off his defender to score.

The national side ran in six unanswered tries to secure a deserving win.

Head coach Gareth Baber said the win gauged the team's performance after it won the New Zeland 7s in Hamilton a few weeks ago.

"This is the start we wanted coming into the game like that," Baber said.

"You want to see where you are in terms of what we have left behind in Hamilton and where you were in the past couple of weeks."

Baber said the timing of his impact players also made the difference in the second spell.

"I think we were aggressive without the ball and when we had the ball on our hands we were very clinical and that is the start we like.

"To play and to put pressure on the oppositions and we utilise what Fijians are always good at - finding space and scoring tries."

Fiji's other tries were scored by Amenoni Nasilasila, Vatemo Ravouvou, Jerry Tuwai and Josua Vakurinabili.

Nasilasila converted three tries while Ravouvou managed to convert his own try.
