Blues lose to City

VODAFONE Lautoka side rested four key players in their 0-1 loss to defending champion Auckland City in the Oceania Champions League at the Trust Arena in New Zealand yesterday.

Speedy Samuela Drudru, who was the hero in the last game against AS Venus, Dave Radrigai, Kavaia Rawaqa and Kolinio Sivoki were named in the reserve bench. Edward Justin, Shazil Ali, Jone Vesikula and Arami Manumanubai started the match.

Despite the change, City was frustrated in the match and copped four yellow cards.

Lautoka opted for a defensive game as Brain Kaltack cancelled numerous attacks by City, but the Fiji champions faced a major blow in the 42nd minute when Manumanubai was shown a straight red card for roughing up City player Darren White.

Despite being a man down, Lautoka held their lines and City, who have thrashed the other pool opponents, managed a goal in the 70th minute through Emiliano Tade.

Kamal Swamy said the reserve players stepped up in the match. He said key players were rested to avoid suspension on a second yellow card issue.

"They (City) were the defending champions and they had the home advantage but I think we missed some key players in this game which did not start because of the yellow cards. The reserves played really well. We knew what to do and I think it was a good game," Swamy told OFC Media.

"We know that we have a good side and with the reserve players performing and we now know that if a player gets injured we have an equal player on the bench."

The draws for the quarter-final stage will be released soon. Lautoka will be travelling when the quarter-final stage starts in April.

Swamy hopes to face an island team in their quarter-final. The side had booked their place in the last eight prior to this clash following wins over Madang and AS Venus.
