ATHLETE Eugene Vollmer's preparation for his triple jump competition at the 2018 Commonwealth Games is on track, says Athletics Fiji chief development officer Joseph Rodan Junior.

Vollmer bagged a silver medal in the 2017 Pacific Mini Games in Port Vila Vanuatu.

"Eugene will compete in the triple jump for Team Fiji and we will see if he could also be entered in the long jump and run in the 4x100 metres men's relay team," Rodan said.

"Everyone has to be healthy for the competition.

"The Commonwealth Games is so close and we do not want to dash out at the last minute."

Vollmer, 28, was injured and was on a recovery program. He made a come back in athletics at the Pacific Mini Games. He has also set his sight for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

"Our expectation is to get the athletes out of the qualifiers and get them into the finals.

"In the Commonwealth Games, they have a qualifying mark and if you can do it in one throw or three throws then you are into the finals.

"If there are only a handful who qualify and if the quota does not meet then they will select the next best athletes in the line of the ranking to make the numbers," Rodan said.

"There are no relay team which Fiji will field in the girls' competition, but for the boys, we will have 4x100 metres and 4x400 metres in the Commonwealth Games."

The Commonwealth Games will be held from April 4-15 in Gold Coast, Australia.
