Key challenges

AGRICULTURE and the ocean are big contributors towards climate change, says Minister for Agriculture and Fiji's climate champion, Inia Seruiratu.

He made these comments while speaking at the Oceania Fono which was held at the new Anglican Centre in Suva yesterday.

Mr Seruiratu said while these two were big contributors, they could also be best solutions to problems faced as a result of climate change.

"Rising sea levels is going to affect us in so many ways. It's going to affect our agriculture, food security and have social implications particularly for our people living in coastal areas," Mr Seruiratu said.

He said one of the key challenges faced was looking at the issue of displacement of people internally with Pacific small atoll islands being an area of concern.

"We must come up with the right solutions. Because when people move, for example here in Fiji, after Tropical Cyclone Winston, some people have decided not to go back to Koro Island and Vanuabalavu.

"This is internally displacement," he said.

"Then we are worried about the people of Tuvalu. If sea level rise continues, there will be climate refugees. This is another big challenge."

He reiterated that people should look after the environment as nature was the best solution to all these problems.

He said when it came to developments, principles of development should be accounted for instead of economic gains.

"It is about cultivating the people. This is the best solution to all this problems. We can have the best technology, the funds, best systems and processes in the world but it takes people to bring sustainable development," he added.

Meanwhile, archbishops and other members of the "Fono" also boarded the Uto ni Yalo yesterday as part of their program.
