POLICE have handed over the crash site of the Pacific Flying School's Cessna 172 to the independent investigator from New Zealand yesterday.

In a statement, acting deputy commissioner of police Rusiate Tudravu said the post-mortem examination of Merelesita Lutu and Iliesa Tawalo had been completed on Friday evening.

ACP Tudravu said the bodies had been handed over to their loved ones.

"We can now also confirm that the crash scene will be handed over to the New Zealand appointed investigator today (yesterday)," he said.

"The post-mortem results will not be released as it is an ongoing investigation."

On whether the bodies of the two victims would be taken to Suva for funeral rites considering their decomposed state, acting DCP Tudravu said: "Once we have released the bodies we do not have any say on it. It is up to the relatives if they want to take the bodies across to Viti Levu."

When approached for a comment the victims' parents Emosi Lutu and Jowana Tawalo said yesterday they were returning to Viti Levu to plan funeral arrangements with family members.

Mr Lutu said the bodies of the victims would make their last trip to Viti Levu this week.
