DELLA Shaw Elder is appreciative of the support from Weightlifting Fiji, Oceania and her employers, the Fiji Sports Council that she believes has aided to get an opportunity to officiate at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.

She is the first Fijian to be given the honour.

And, the opportunity has the former Oceania weight-lifting queen reeling in shock yesterday.

"I'm shocked and very excited," she said.

"I am looking forward to it because this will be my first Commonwealth Games. The enjoyment part is that in weight-lifting, you can referee even if athletes from your country. That is how professional the sport of weight-lifting is.

"My dream is to see myself at the Olympic Games in 2020."

Weightlifting Fiji yesterday said International Weightlifting Federation had appointed Elder to officiate.

WF general secretary Ritesh Ratiram said she was the only female category 1 technical official in the Pacific region in weight-lifting.

"The opportunity to officiate at the Commonwealth Games is another feather in her cap and provides valuable experience and builds on her capacity as a top-level referee," Ratiram said.

Last year Elder officiated at the Commonwealth Championship, Asian Indoor and Martial Arts and the Pacific Mini Games.

"At the Commonwealth Championship (2017), Della was asked to be on the jury team, which is the highest honour for a technical official in weight-lifting."

Shaw started her sporting career as an athletics sprinter, but was 'loaned' to the Weightlifting Fiji team for the 1995 South Pacific Games, in Tahiti.

She won a weight-lifting gold medal in Tahiti and in 1996 at the Oceania Championship. She hasn't looked back since.

Della works at the Fiji Sports Council. She is thankful to her employers for their continued support that helps her contribute towards Weightlifting Fiji's success.
