Councils urged to partner

MUNICIPAL councils were encouraged to partner with communities and the private sector, raise capital for green climate financing and other innovative mechanism for finance.

The councils were encouraged by Secretary General for the Commonwealth, Dr Greg Munro, who spoke from London via a recorded video clip at the 5th Fijian Local Government Forum at the Albert Park conference room in Suva on Wednesday.

"We have made available to the Government of Fiji the outcome of our conference," Dr Munro said.

"I am aware that you are spreading time on strategic plans aligned to the National Development Plan, the new urban agenda and global climate change resolutions as well as housing, urban design protocols and other important areas."

Dr Munro also said Fiji played a significant role in the region — where much of its deliberation could influence a wider Pacific region.

"We see success in local government in Fiji as a potential spring board of learning for local government elsewhere in the Pacific.

"We support each other and learn best practices from each other and more importantly, develop innovative and sustainable ways of making the lives of communities better," he said.
