Focus on more trade opportunities

TRADE opportunities between South Africa and Fiji were the focus of discussions during a trade show organised by the South African High Commission and Nadi Chamber of Commerce yesterday.

In a statement, the High Commission said a roundtable discussion was co-hosted on trade opportunities with South Africa.

"The purpose of the roundtable discussion was to search for means of increasing trade between South Africa and Fiji especially in the area of export business," the statement said.

"The initiative also assists in promoting a better understanding of the South African market to the Fijian private business and provided the opportunity to market South Africa as being open for business.

"It is not the first time the two institutions hosted an annual event like this, and there is an acknowledgement that there is progress albeit on a small scale.

"In some outlets, one could find a few South African products and there is a need to magnify this scope of penetration into the Fiji market."

The High Commission also highlighted wine, jewellery, leather and canned fruit as products which could do well in Fiji.

According to the High Commission, Fiji was a hub which provided an important space for South African products to reach out to the other Pacific Islands.
