Security deposit

THE Fiji Electricity Authority (FEA) has periodically reviewed its consumer's security deposit for all electricity account holders.

The authority made this known yesterday as required under the Electricity Act to hold a refundable deposit amount equivalent to two months consumption of electricity for every account.

In a statement issued by FEA chief executive officer Hasmukh Patel, FEA saw the need to appropriately review the deposits as required under the law.

The last review on the consumer security deposit for all FEA account holders was carried out in October 2011.

"This refundable deposit is held by FEA as security for consumption of electricity. Upon closure and/or transfer of the electricity account by the customer, the account is adjusted for any amount owing to the authority against this deposit and the balance is refunded to the customer," Mr Patel stated.

"All customers have an option to update their security deposits by providing a bank guarantee or payment by cash."

Mr Patel said they had initially issued letters to some electricity customers advising them of the revised consumer deposit.

The letter had included additional amount required to be paid to the authority based on their consumption over the past six months.

But the authority has advised customers to disregard the letter for the time being.

"We wish to advise these customers that there was an anomaly in the process and FEA will carry out a thorough analysis and consult all stakeholders," Mr Patel stated.

"FEA sincerely apologises for any inconvenience caused to our valued customers."

Under the Electricity Act Cap 180 Rev 1985 Regulations, every person desiring to become a consumer shall deposit with the authority before connection of his circuits to the supply, and thereafter maintain with the authority, a deposit of sum estimated by the authority to be equal to the total amount of all charges likely to be incurred by the consumer for the supply of energy and hire of apparatus for two months but not being less than $10.

This will be a security for the due payment for energy to be supplied to him and for hire of the authority's apparatus.
