800 dengue cases recorded so far

DENGUE remains a concern for the Health Ministry, with more than 800 positive cases recorded in the country so far this year.

Health Minister Rosy Akbar said in an effort to curb dengue numbers, the ministry had rolled out a "Fight the bite clean-up Fiji" campaign aimed at destroying mosquito breeding grounds.

"Mosquitoes that spread dengue, Zika and chikungunya can breed anywhere there is stagnant water and the best way to prevent these mosquito-borne diseases is by stopping them from breeding in the first place," Ms Akbar said.

"A clean Fiji is a healthy Fiji. Rubbish harbours disease. To tackle this issue, we have regular awareness campaigns against mosquitoes, particularly during the rainy season and this is supplemented by concentrated bursts of action during outbreaks. In 2016, the World Health Organization announced there was a new threat, in the form of Zika virus, also spread by the same mosquito that spreads dengue.

"While our monitoring of disease trends in Fiji has shown that Zika virus has not caused many infections, especially compared with dengue fever, it is important that we continue to work towards reducing the risk of the Zika virus spreading in Fiji."
