THE tragic aircraft crash that claimed two lives on a Vanua Levu mountain range is a wake-up call for the nation, says Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere.

He said the recent turn of events made stakeholders realise the importance of having an emergency response team specifically trained for aviation accidents.

"The world has become bigger with the use of advanced technologies and organisations have upgraded operating systems to suit the changing world," Ratu Wiliame said. "So it's necessary to have local response teams specifically tasked to deal with these kinds of accidents.

"But we thank the police, military and firefighters for a superb job because they have done tremendously well."

Ratu Wiliame said roles of stakeholders was important when dealing with such incidents.

"While we are saddened by the fact that two people died at the crash site, we need to play our part as stakeholders," he said.

"We need to ensure that we have people trained for this kind of rescue that involves a plane crash or even an aircraft.

"It is very important for us to do this and train our people to have special expertise to cater for such accidents involving aircraft."
