2018 general elections: Student commits to be the voice of youths

Update: 4:29PM TWENTY-year-old Apenisa Vatuniveivuke could be the youngest candidate to ever contest the general elections after he was announced as a provisional candidate for the National Federation Party today.

With the objective to be the voice of youths to national discussions, Mr Vatuveivuke said he was particularly passionate about making real changes to the current loopholes in the Tertiary Education Loan Scheme (TELS) under the Tertiary Scholarship Loans Board (TSLB).

"I am passionate about the amount of load being put on students who say education is free but that is not the fact. When TELS was made as a policy, students did not have a seat in the negotiation of TELS, and I think students need to have a seat on the table in order to re-negotiate TELS in order to make it more fair and equitable for students," Mr Vatuniveivuke said.

"I don't think it is fair for students to start work, be happy about getting a job and then having to pay about $30,000 to $40,000 in school fees back to the government."

Originally from Moala in Lau with maternal links to Rewa, Mr Vatuniveivuke said he was not trying to run the country but was strongly committed to being the voice of 40 per cent of the population who were often overlooked in national decision-making.

"As a student and as a citizen of Fiji, I do not wish to engage in the dirty politics of the past. I wish to engage in the politics of positivity and progress because that is what this nation needs and that is the only way we can go forward if we are positive and passionate about progress."

Mr Vatuniveivuke is a student at the University of the South Pacific, majoring in Journalism and Law.
