Vegas pressure

Maciu Malo In Las Vegas
Friday, March 02, 2018

FIJI Airways Fiji 7s head coach Gareth Baber says the only pressure for his players in this weekend's USA 7s in Las Vegas is the expectation from Fijians fans.

This is after Fiji's win in Hamilton during the New Zealand 7s in the last leg of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

Baber said the one-week training camp at Arizona helped the team to focus on the task ahead and at the same time adapt to the cold weather.

Baber said he had worked out plans on how to attack Fiji's opponents based on the talents he had in the team.

"The pressure is that the expectation rises," he said.

"The expectation on us after what we did in Hamilton and of the quality that we delivered. We want to replicate that this weekend.

"We know all teams are coming for us and it's going to be exciting."

The temperature recorded at Las Vegas was six degrees Celsius which is a far cry from what the players are used to in Fiji.

However, Baber said the players had adapted well to the weather and hoped it would not affect their performance.

"They adapt pretty well wherever we go around the world and it's never really an issue.

"It is a little bit colder than what we have in Fiji, but the players are used to it."

Meanwhile, the side had a scrimmaging session with Spain on Wednesday.

Baber used various combinations during the friendly game in his effort to select the best 12 for this weekend.

In the first set, he used Jasa Veremalua, Mesulame Kunavula and Vasikali Mudu as the forwards, Jerry Tuwai at halfback, Vatemo Ravouvou at playmaker with Sevuloni Mocenacagi and Eroni Sau out wide.

During the game, he then unleashed Josua Vakurinabuli, Kalione Nasoko and Paula Dranisinikula, Waisea Nacuqu, Amenoni Nasilasila and Batinisavu Uluiyata.

He then continued to swap the players' positions with Nacuqu running on the wing, Sau at rover and Nasilasila at playmaker.

Baber will name his final 12-member team today (Fiji time).
