Sau will play the game of his life

Maciu Malo In Las Vegas
Friday, March 02, 2018

FIJI Airways Fiji 7s most marked man Eroni Sau will play the game of his life at this weekend Las Vegas 7s.

The Marou Village native from Naviti, Yasawa, said he wanted to dedicate this tournament to his two daughters, Esther and Grace Sau, who will be eagerly waiting to watch their father on television.

Sau, who stamped his mark after four HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series tournaments, is ready to face any opponent during the three-day tournament.

"This is expected to be one of the best tournaments for me because I wanted to dedicate this outing to my two daughters, Esther and Grace," said Sau.

"I also dedicate this game to my wife, who has been there for me looking after our kids when I am away on national duties.

"Not forgetting my 87-year-old grandfather and namesake who will be eagerly waiting back at my mum's village in Nabukeru, Yasawa."

When asked about his new nickname, the 'Sledgehammer' he smiled and said his friends and relatives always make fun of him with his new name.

"When I returned home after the Hamilton 7s win, most of my cousins from the village called me and told me in Yasawa dialect 'ei eva no nai tuki ei qwaqwa vina no?' (Is the hammer still powerful?).

"I just laughed back at them and I don't even know who gave me that nickname. I am blessed and thankful to the Almighty God that people have recognised my talents.

"I need to work hard to stamp my mark this weekend, especially to continue from where I left off in my previous games."

"I know many players will be out to mark me and I am ready to face any opponent. It is going to be another weekend of tough competitions."

Sau is one of the nine players in the team who haven't tasted victory at Las Vegas.

This will inspire this Yasawa 'Sledgehammer' to hit and break any barrier infront of the Gareth Baber-coached side in the Sin City this weekend.

Fiji will face Russia in their opening game followed by France on Saturday. The side will play their third pool game against Kenya on Sunday.
