Blackhawks focuses on fitness

THE Blackhawks volleyball team needs to work on their fitness before the Easter championship this month.

The Kinoya-based team defeated newcomers Delainavesi three sets to one in the semi-final but went down to Rebels three set to one in the final of the Oceania Volleyball Club Championship.

Manager Rosa Dalituicama wasn't happy with their performance despite having a few national reps in the team.

"To be honest I wasn't happy with their performance I think they played below what I expected. Delainavesi is relatively a new and young team but they gave us a good run," she said.

"Compared with players who have previously represented Fiji, I don't think their performance was on that level but on another hand they did tell me they were unfit right now.

"They have set the bar for themselves right now considering the fact a lot of them are former national reps and comparing that with a very young Delainavesi team, they struggled."

With the services of Makiti Raratabu, Iliesa Makasiale, Vakacegu Walesi, Sakiusa Bolatawa and Jope Tokalauvere they showed plenty of skills to overcome their opponents.

Delainavesi had the services of national rep Anthony Foster which boosted the side, but wasn't good enough to secure them a win.

Rosa also mentioned that the game against Rebels was always tough.

"We last won against Rebels in 2016 during Easter and also a lot of the boys in the Rebels team are members of the national team so they play against each other a lot and they know each other well.

"We expected tough competition given they (Rebels) are the defending Coconut Vibe competition and the Marist tournament winners."

In the women's final LFC Army defeated UNIX three set to two. Both teams will represent Fiji in the Asian Volleyball club competition this year.
