KENNOL Narayan was 22 years old when he won the ultra marathon in the 2016 Island Chill Suva Marathon.

He stunned many as a first-timer as he reached the tape first after running 52 kilometres.

He clocked 3 hours and 15 minutes.

The lanky runner will be among competitors in this year's run.

"I try to be at the top of my game to win," he said.

Narayan prefers vegetarian dishes because of the protein supply, healthy foods and carbohydrates and essential vitamins to build his stamina.

"If you want to be serious about sports and education, don't indulge in drugs, alcohol or cigarette.

"As an athlete it is very important to remain disciplined, humble, focused and respectful to all peers.

"It's a learning curve, but it will take a person far, not just in the sports, but in the personal and professional arena," Narayan said.

"My running career started as an exercise to keep healthy."

He competed in the 2016 Suva Marathon after watching the annual race's advertisement on television.

Kennol runs for an hour every morning and does speed work every afternoon.

On Sunday, he goes for his long runs for 2-3 hours through gravel roads .

"I don't have a training partner in Rakiraki, but I keep on pushing myself because it is my dream to become a professional runner.

"My icon is British long-distance and Olympics gold medallist, Mo Farah (Sir Mohamed Muktar Jama Farah.) He is focused and very determined."

Kennol is from Lautoka, but works in Rakiraki.
