Villagers set for NZ scheme

SEVEN villagers from Naitasiri left Nadi International Airport on Monday bound for Auckland, New Zealand, where they will participate in a three-month seasonal workers program.

The villagers from Matawailevu, Wainimala, had been signed up for the program under the National Employment Centre.

Penioni Rokotuiqaloqalo said they did not expect to be leaving for a new country soon.

"We had been going to training workshops with the National Employment Centre for the past couple of weeks and we thought that our selection would take a while," he said.

"Last week we received confirmation that we would be leaving today (Monday) and a lot of us had to rush to get our things together before leaving."

He said the group would pick fruits for a farming business in Auckland.

"I've heard a lot of stories from those who went before us and a lot of them did not do well," Mr Rokotuiqaloqalo said.

"But we are going as a group from the same village and we all have the same goal.

"We want to come back with enough money to start our business.

"Our youth group runs a cattle farming business and we believe the money that we get from our work in New Zealand will help us expand."
