Father laments daughter's demise

"ONE thing we will always remember her for is that she is always trying to help her friends."

These were the somber memories and words spoken by Emosi Lutu, father of Merelesita Lutu, after the family received the news of her on Wednesday night.

Mr Lutu said although their daughter had left a void behind in their lives, they were grateful they were able to do their part in supporting her dream of becoming a pilot.

Ms Lutu, the youngest daughter of Mr Lutu was on board the Pacific Flying School's Cessna 172 plane that went missing after it failed to land at Labasa Airport on Monday.

She was accompanied by her instructor, Iliesa Tawalo.

A joint rescue effort by villagers and officers from the Fiji Police Force and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces discovered the wreckage of the plane and the bodies of the two aviators in the Delaikoro Mountain area on Vanua Levu on Wednesday afternoon.

Mr Lutu initially disagreed with Merelesita joining pilot school because of the risk associated with the job.

"That was the career she chose. She didn't finish it but we are pleased as parents that we supported her to follow that path even though we didn't want her to," Mr Lutu said.

"I believe we have done our bit as parents. We always didn't want to discourage her. We've always encouraged her to study hard so she can get a job. We have done our duty.

"She can go without things just to help her friends. She is always sharing things with them. She's now in a better place."
