Rabuka clears the air

SOCIAL Democratic Liberal Party leader Sitiveni Rabuka has cleared the air about Ro Dona Takalaiyale's position, saying his appointment as vice-president of the party was according to the SODELPA constitution.

However, Mr Rabuka said Ro Dona was not an authorised party spokesperson because he had not been authorised by the party president as the vice-president to comment on public relations matters for the party.

Mr Rabuka made these comments after a meeting of the party's working committee on Wednesday.

He said the issue about Ro Dona's membership had been resolved after an internal inquiry and that his membership had been paid for by the Opposition Leader prior to the special general assembly on December 9 last year.

Mr Rabuka said he was informed that volunteers at last year's SGM failed to issue a receipt for payment by the Opposition Leader.

He said this had been sorted and receipted and Ro Dona's appointment during the SGM in December last year was valid.

"With regard to the call for a special general assembly (SGA), only the party management board has the authority to call an SGA," Mr Rabuka said.

"Furthermore, the party constitution stipulates the process and procedures to be followed for any grievance(s) from party members. Ro Dona and his fellow complainants had requested a talanoa session to resolve their grievance. This request had been approved by the party's working committee and a meeting would take place later this week with Ro Dona and his fellow complainants."

He added SODELPA was a multiracial party that welcomed members from all ethnic communities in the country to join the party.

"Any financial member can be an office bearer immaterial of ethnicity, as long as they are endorsed by a majority at the general assembly."
