A RUGBY team has been commended for their quick action in foiling the escape plans of two men alleged to have robbed a taxidriver.

Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said members of the First Light Taveuni sevens rugby team were praised for their brave actions that resulted in the two men being arrested.

"The incident occurred at Wailoaloa Beach, when a taxidriver in his 50s was allegedly assaulted and robbed by two men who later fled the scene," she said.

"Another taxidriver who saw the alleged incident alerted members of the 7s team who were training nearby and they pursued the two, where they managed to apprehend the duo who are both in their 20s.

"Namaka police were alerted whereby they arrived at the scene and arrested the two suspects."

Both men are in custody as investigations continue. West divisional police commander SSP Abdul Khan said senior officers had accompanied him on a visit to the team at their camp and conveyed the organisation's gratitude for their actions.

"It's always great from the policing perspective to receive any form of assistance that will lead to the quick arrest of suspects of crime and the actions of the First Light Taveuni 7s rugby team has enabled that," he said.
