Baber's 7s plan

Maciu Malo In Las Vegas
Thursday, March 01, 2018

Fiji Airways Fiji 7s team coach Gareth Baber says he is working on different strategies to counter any team based on the weapons he has in his unit.

He has proven that this plan worked well at the Hamilton 7s and will be banking on this to secure his second title in this year's HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series during the Las Vegas tournament this weekend.

Baber said he would be making positional changes when the need arises and was grateful to have a bunch of talented players in the team.

He said most players in the team could play two to three positions perfectly and this, he said separated the Fijians from other teams in the world.

Some of these players include Amenoni Nasilasila, Waisea Nacuqu, Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Jasa Veremalua, Kalione Nasoko, Vatemo Ravouvou and Eroni Sau.

"I am always looking at strategies when you go into the game with different combination that will provide you threats for the oppositions," said Baber.

"Obviously Sevu (Mocenacagi) can play in the forwards and in the backs, Waisea (Nacuqu) can play halfback, playmaker or be a winger, Eroni (Sau) can also play in few positions.

"They have some sorts of flexibility and being able to put 12 people together to fight for a tournament over six games is a big bonus.

"Not all the teams can do that and I look for players who can do that.

"Strategically I look at how I can put them in the games at the right time - be it in the starting line-up or an impact player."

Baber said this strategy worked perfectly in the Hamilton 7s where the national side shut the Springboks scoreless in the second spell to win the final.

"We did this in Hamilton, for Naduva originally I put him as an impact player and gave him more space on the field when players are tired to go and do what he does best with his quick feet.

"I was blessed with that kind of speed, you are always looking for small advantages in all the games and all add up in victory," he added.

Fiji is pooled with Russia, France and Kenya this weekend.
