A mother's touch

WITNESSING the struggle and pain endured by his role model mum some 20 years ago at their farm in the Nadroga Navosa highlands inspired Fiji Airways Fiji 7s forward Vasikali Mudu to be the person he is today.

Mudu, who forced his way into the Fiji 7s team after an impressive outing with the Drua team in this last year's National Rugby Championship, has been singly raised by his mother Sarafina Lewanibuna all these years.

The versatile Nadroga rugby open side flanker said the struggle faced by his "market vendor mum" to put food on the table motivated him to work hard.

He even said he had yet to meet his dad and since then had set his childhood goal to be successful — to repay his mum for the pain she endured and the everlasting love she had for him and his sister.

"Every time I leave our shores for a rugby tour I always remember my mum," he said.

"Without her I won't be here today.

"I faced a lot of difficulties during my early days because I was singly raised by her. She is only a market vendor and a part time farmer but she provided everything for me and my sister.

"Seeing the pain and the struggle she faced back at our home in Yalavou in Nadroga really made me to work hard."

Mudu said he usually helped her mum in their farm planting rootcrops and vegetables for the family.

The 23-year-old said being the only man in the family his dream was to bring smiles to his mum's face in the near future.

"My aim is to be successful and repay mum for all she had done for me."

"I thank the Almighty Lord for giving me this rugby talent which I believe is a source of happiness and blessing to my family.

"I always give my best every time I play because I know I am playing for a special person.

"And I know that mum will be proud of my rugby achievements."

Mudu said he would dedicate his game this weekend to his mum and had vowed to come to give his best for his number one fan.

He has been used by coach Gareth Baber as an impact player.

"This weekend like all other previous games — is always dedicated to mum.

"I know she will be eager to watch me on TV back home and I will do my best for her if given the opportunity to play."

Mudu who was part of the historic Ratu Navula side that won the Fiji Secondary School under-18 Deans trophy in 2013, said he had learnt a lot from the 7s outing and would want to stamp his mark in the team.
