THE 2017-2018 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series moves to Las Vegas in the United States this week.

The Fiji Airways Fiji 7s team is ranked third in the series table after the historic win at the New Zealand 7s in Hamilton early last month. The Gareth Baber-coached side is the top seed and is pooled with Kenya, France, and Russia. Pool B has South Africa, England, Canada and Wales. Pool c: Australia, Samoa, USA, Spain. Pool D: New Zealand, Scotland, Argentina and Uruguay. The tournament is hosted by the entertainment capital of the world.

For us in the Pacific, here's a bit about Las Vegas as Jerry Tuwai and his men get ready to unleash another weekend of rugby 7s entertainment.

City in the desert

Las Vegas, in Nevada's Mojave Desert, is a resort city famed for its vibrant nightlife, centered around 24-hour casinos and other entertainment options. Its main street and focal point is the Strip, just over 4 miles long. This boulevard is home to themed hotels with elaborate displays such as fountains synchronised to music as well as replicas of an Egyptian pyramid, the Venetian Grand Canal, and the Eiffel Tower.

Elevation: 610metres

Population: 632,912 (2016)

Area code: Area code 702

On May 15, 1905, Las Vegas officially was founded as a city, when 110 acres (45 ha), in what would later become downtown, were auctioned to ready buyers.Las Vegas was the driving force in the creation of Clark County, Nevada in 1909 and the city was incorporated in 1911 as a part of the county.

The first person of European ancestry to enter the Las Vegas valley was Rafael Rivera, who scouted the area in 1821 as part of Antonio Armijo's expedition to open up a trade route-the Old Spanish Trail-between New Mexico and California. Rivera named the valley Las Vegas, "the meadows," after its spring-watered grasses.

The city anchors the Las Vegas Valley metropolitan area and is the largest city within the greater Mojave Desert.

Las Vegas is an internationally renowned major resort city, known primarily for its gambling, shopping, fine dining, entertainment, and nightlife. The city bills itself as 'The Entertainment Capital of the World', and is famous for its mega casino-hotels and associated activities. It is a top three destination in the United States for business conventions and a global leader in the hospitality industry, claiming more AAA Five Diamond hotels than any other city in the world.

Today, Las Vegas annually ranks as one of the world's most visited tourist destinations. The city's tolerance for numerous forms of adult entertainment earned it the title of Sin City, and has made Las Vegas a popular setting for literature, films, television programs, and music videos.
