ILIESA and Maria Vakaruru aim to win gold medals in their respective events and also improve their time in the upcoming Suva secondary schools athletics zone one competition.

They were part of the Assemblies of God High School inter-house competition at the ANZ Stadium in Suva yesterday.

The siblings competed in the senior grades' 100 metres and 200m finals.

Maria was motivated by her brother's presence in the same grade.

"I look up to him as my mentor and a leader to our younger siblings," she said.

"He helped train me when I was selected to be part of the school's 4x400 metres relay team in last year's Coca-Cola Games.

"He is fast and always does well in the inter-house competition, but he always misses out in the zone and Coca-Cola Games.

"I am grateful that he is always around to help me and our younger siblings."

Their father is former Fiji 15s rugby rep, Samuela Vakaruru, who now plays in France.

For Iliesa, he is proud to have his sister participate in athletics.

"She loves running and watching her run on the tracks shows how confident she is," he said.

"Now that we're both in the final squad, we hope to do something special for our younger siblings.

"I am more in to rugby than athletics, but that will not stop me from helping my sister achieve her dreams."

He finished second in the 100 and 200m finals behind the school champion Romuluse Senimoli.

Apostles win inter-house

APOSTLES House won the overall medal tally with 28 gold medals, 15 silver and 13 bronze medals.

Assistant head of PEMAC department Nawi Rokodulu said they were happy with the performance and mainly the attendance of their athletes.

Judges House finished second with 23 gold, 26 silver and 15 bronze medals followed by Prophet House with 20 gold, 12 silver and 19 bronze medals while Kings House was at the tail end with 16 gold medals, 17 silver and 12 bronze medals.
