Fight against climate change

Solomone Rabulu
Thursday, March 01, 2018

CLIMATE services are increasingly important to support climate risk management, adaption to climate change and sustainable development of many sectors, says Fiji Meteorological Service (FMS) director Ravind Kumar.

Mr Kumar said Fiji, like other small island developing states, was vulnerable to the effects of global warming, climate variability and climate change.

"Fiji through FMS under the global framework for climate services (GFCS) is committed to advance and implement GFCS's key pillars at national level," Mr Kumar said.

"For these, we need to start a dialogue so that climate services products and services remain relevant to a wide variety of users and sectors.

"This will assist everyone in planning, policy and better managing the risk arising from climate variability and change."

Mr Kumar said thus, the aim for the workshop was for participants to assist in the compilation of the climate services and implementation plan for FMS.

"This will only be possible if we all work together to identify what climate products and services will be most useful to the different climate sensitive sectors, and identifying gaps and opportunities to enhance the climate service delivery," he said.

"Participation of key stakeholders and decisions makers was expected to facilitate the identification of appropriate mechanisms to improve and sustain the flow of climate information to different users in Fiji.

"Also to better understanding by key stakeholders of climate information and its application in different sectors; better understanding by FMS on the needs of different users and sectors."
