FLOOD warnings and alerts are still in place for low-lying areas on Vanua Levu and parts of Viti Levu, says Fiji Meteorological Service director Ravind Kumar.

He said an active trough of low pressure over the Fiji Group was expected to affect the country until later this week.

"Flood warnings and alerts are in force for low-lying areas and small streams for Vanua Levu and parts of Viti Levu," he said.

"Periods of rain heavy at times with squally thunderstorms over northern, western and interior parts of Viti Levu and nearby smaller islands is predicted for today (yesterday) and tomorrow (today) and thereafter gradually easing to occasional rain, heavy at times with a few thunderstorms.

"Other parts of the country may expect occasional rain, heavy at times and squally thunderstorms and easing from the West.

"However, northern and eastern parts of the country may experience wetter conditions until the end of the week."

He said the chance of flash flooding and flooding of low-lying areas remained high.

Members of the public have been urged to take heed of advisories when issued.
