Chaudhry highlights issues

ONE of the many social issues raised during the Fiji Labour Party consultations is the increasing cost of living, says Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry.

Mr Chaudhry claimed discontentment was raised over poor wages of workers and exploitation with the national minimum wage set at a contemptible $2.68 per hour.

"There is high unemployment with the influx of foreign workers taking up jobs from the local people and rising urban and rural poverty levels," Mr Chaudhry claimed.

He claimed there was an acute shortage of affordable housing for people with ordinary incomes who constituted 60 per cent or more of the population.

"There is also the issue of falling health care standards, notable increase in criminal activity, eticketing of bus fares and high cost of tertiary education," he said.

He highlighted that there were many issues faced as well in terms of governance. Mr Chaudhry claimed there was mismanagement of the economy and public finances leading to irresponsible borrowing.

"There are also disturbing reports of cultural nepotism and crony capitalism and relegation of Parliament to a one party institution by the systematic derogation of the opposition parties," he claimed.

He said the party's manifesto would be released closer to the election.
