Hygiene packs for rural school students

A UNIQUE women hygiene product is helping female students in remote rural areas cope with the challenges.

Female students of Thomas Baker Memorial School in Nanoko in the interior of Navosa often miss classes and some times could not afford buying sanitary pads.

They are now able to better manage thanks to the reusable Days for Girls packs given by the Melbourne-based Brighton North Rotary Club.

Club member Margaret Hamilton said this was done in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Mrs Hamilton said she had been visiting Fiji for the past 26 years and was moved by the information she received about female students missing school during their menstruation.

"The kit is washable and can be reused, it is economical and hygienic," she said.

She started the project of distributing the kits last year.

"I am glad to work in partnership with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and Ba Women's Forum in distributing the kits.

"We started with remote schools and hope to reach out to many girls in rural villages who cannot afford to buy disposable pads."

School head girl Salote Kuruibua said the assistance provided to the girls would help them attend classes regularly.

"This will also relieve us from buying sanitary pads," she said.

Youth Ministry manager Western Division, Valami Naloga, said they would continue to work with overseas donors where possible to reach out to rural youths.

Days for Girls is a grassroots charity organisation that has a network of teams and chapters around the world that make and raise funds to provide sanitary hygiene kits.
