TAVUA will soon have a new emergency operations centre.

Funded by the European Union through its Building Safety and Resilience in the Pacific (BSRP) project, the Tavua Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) will act as a co-ordination centre during natural disasters.

Tavua Town Council chief executive officer Vikash Naidu welcomed the initiative, saying it would also assist Tavua and surrounding communities co-ordinate post-disaster relief and rehabilitation efforts.

"It's a great initiative to have a centre where all emergency responders can organise and co-ordinate their work," he said

The centre is scheduled to be opened this Friday by Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Natural Disaster Management Joeli Cawaki.

The EU-funded projected was implemented with the assistance of the Pacific Community (SPC).

According to SPC, after Tropical Cyclone Winston, the BSRP project identified a need to decentralise disaster co-ordination to ensure effective preparedness and response.

Over the past year, the BSRP project has worked closely with the Fiji National Disaster Management Office to establish three EOCs around the country, and four more are being planned.
