Update: 9:45PM NAZHAT Shameem, chief negotiator for the Fijian delegation at the Conference of the Parties in Bonn, Germany in November 2017 has been removed from the post for the duration of the Fijian presidency.

Fiji holds the presidency of the 23rd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework on Climate Change until the end of this year when Poland takes over.

However after 9pm tonight, a government statement said the Prime Minister was "announcing a change of personnel in Fiji's COP Presidency team".

Ms Shameem who is Fiji's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva is no longer chief negotiator with immediate effect.

Luke Daunivalu, the Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations is now Fiji's Chief Negotiator.

"I want to thank Ambassador Shameem Khan for her immense contribution to the success of our COP campaign and look forward to her continuing to build on some of the diplomatic initiatives we have been pursuing in Geneva in the field of human rights and closer engagement with the various nations and agencies based there," the statement said.

"Ambassador Daunivalu is a qualified replacement and I am confident that the leadership and teamwork he will bring to the role of Chief Negotiator will strengthen our campaign for maximum ambition and maximum climate action all the way to COP24 and beyond."
