Soccer in Fiji

Raymond Singh, Lautoka
Wednesday, February 28, 2018

Congratulations to The Fiji Times and Fiji Football Association for teaming up to produce the weekly Goal Fiji newspaper.

Fiji FA has been applauded for introducing MUM & POP league for children from ages five - 10 years.

The Vodafone Premier League, Senior League, U19 Youth League, U18 Girls League and U16 boys' and girls' league are all being played.

The reality is that the backbone of Fiji soccer has previously been about club soccer as mentioned by Shah and Lingam.

The strongly contested club level soccer is hardly seen these days and we hardly can produce players such as Esala Masi and Roy Krishna to play at a higher level.

Once again, most Premier districts have to rely on overseas imports.

A typical example is the Lautoka team playing in the OFC in New Zealand. All three goals for Lautoka were scored by the three imports.

Through club soccer came the local talents in players such as Kelemedi Vosuga "Cheetah", Sam Work, Ivor Evans, John Monday, Taito Bula, Lorima Batirerega, Josaia Bukalidi, Satya Singh "Koko", Pita Baleitoga, Ravuama Madigi, the list goes on and on.

Come on Fiji FA, strengthen club level soccer first, as there is mostly nothing to compare about club, provincial, 7s and 15s rugby success apart from supporting the Fiji Rugby Union in its bid to host the HSBC World Rugby Sevens series in Fiji.
