POLICE officer corporal Sharmila Ashwin Lata believes sports help build a person.

She said running, a component in trying to make an athlete fit, helped shaped a person's life.

The 36-year-old Striders Athletics Club member in Nadi said running empowered her.

"Running makes me feel like I'm an invincible superwoman who can accomplish all my dreams," she said.

"It allows me to overcome challenges and running keeps me in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

"A healthy lifestyle disciplines our livelihood.

"It makes us look and feel better about ourselves.

"Eating the right food and keeping fit keep our body physically strong, healthy and also mentally assists our body to positively carry out our work throughout the day.

"A healthy lifestyle helps us to cope with stress and fight illness."

Lata starts her day by training.

"I wake up at three o'clock in the morning to do my workouts and I'm off to work."

She will be part of the 2018 Island Chill Suva Marathon and she urges more women to join in the annual race.

"We should lead by example by having an active in life despite of age, religion and culture.

"I urge people to come out in numbers and participate in order to promote healthy lifestyle in Fiji and to encourage towards a healthy future for Fiji."

She ran her first marathon in 2017 and won a silver medal in the Fiji Games last year for 5000m race at the ANZ Stadium.
