The Government of Japan provided assistance worth $449,542 to Nasinu Town Council yesterday.

The assistance was provided through Japan's Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).

The grant will assist the council in the procurement of two 9-tonne garbage compactor trucks to help the current fleets used by the council.

Japan's ambassador to Fiji Masahiro Omura said waste collection for the Nasinu Town Council was unparalleled because of its accelerated population growth.

"I understand that Nasinu is experiencing an accelerated population growth due to an influx of in-migration.

"The degree of difficulty in waste collection for Nasinu Town Council is unparalleled, however, this can be mitigated with the right equipment and commitment."

Nasinu Town Council special administrator Mosese Kama assured Mr Omura they were obliged to meet the requirements outlined in the contract.

"As a recipient of the project, we your excellency want to assure you that Nasinu Town Council will oblige with full responsibility towards its part in fulfilling all its requirements both in the grant contract and the memorandum of understanding," Mr Kama said.
