Resident raises concern on power outage issue

SEVENTY-NINE-YEAR-OLD Colin Proctor is calling on authorities to look into the power outage issue that had been happening in their area for the past few weeks.

Mr Proctor lives along the Kings Rd, about 10 minutes drive from Korovou Town towards Nayavu.

He said the power outages could be from four to eight hours and sometimes it could be more.

"My family recently had some health issues such as fever and dysentery and we finally figured it could have been because of the meats from our freezer that could have been spoilt," Mr Proctor said.

"The power outages had been happening daily for the past few weeks and everyone is wondering about what the cause was.

"We call on the authorities to explain why these outages are happening because I lost over $500 worth of meat stock last week and on Sunday, I went to buy $150 worth because I live in a farm, and we buy our food in stock."

Mr Proctor said he now planned to buy his family a diesel generator to cater for his family's electric power needs.

"That's not the case, we are paying for our electricity bills, and now we are forced to consider buying a generator just to accommodate our freezer and other appliances in the house," he said.

Fiji Electricity Authority chief executive officer Hasmukh Patel said any unplanned power outages may result from lightning, trees contacting powerlines, vehicle accidents, vandalism where people throw foreign objects on to powerlines, equipment failure because of ageing and wear and tear or third party digging into underground power cables.

"While FEA does its utmost to carry out timely maintenance in order to prevent equipment failure, however, it is impossible to completely eliminate them," Mr Patel said.
