New rides for police

THIRTY new motorcycles were handed to the Fiji Police Force by the Government at Asco Motors in Nabua, Suva yesterday.

Speaking at the handing over ceremony, Acting Prime Minister and Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said it was critical for the Fiji Police Force to be mobile in respect to attending to traffic-related incidents or when responding to crimes.

"As a law enforcement agency and being the first point of contact for complaints by ordinary citizens, the police need to have enough vehicles on the roads in order to be very responsive to the needs and demands of ordinary Fijians," Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

"And also to respond to traffic issues as the number of vehicles in Fiji has increased significantly thus the traffic management is very critical and police need to be spontaneous about their responses.

"We have ordered around 100 motorcycles for police and they obviously are in great need for them"

Asco Motors chief executive officer Craig Sims said the new 30 600cc motorcycles would go a long way for the police.

"Our aim aligns quite closely with the Government of Fiji's aim, which is to provide mobility not only to the Fijian Government, but to the people of Fiji and we want to make sure the services are delivered and attended," Mr Sims said.

"We have a history of providing excellent vehicles and services and after-sales services to the Fijian Government through our lease package.

"The vehicles will be stationed all around Fiji and some to the outer islands and we will be responsible for its servicing, so that these vehicles could be on the road delivering essential services."
