Flash flood warning

Shayal Devi
Wednesday, February 28, 2018

PEOPLE living in low-lying and coastal areas are being urged to take all necessary precautions because of the high risk of flash flooding.

Fiji Meteorological Service (FMS) director Ravind Kumar said heavy rainfall associated with an active trough of low pressure which lay over the country could pose risks for people in flood-prone areas.

"There is high chance of rainfall exceeding 100 millimetres in 24 hours, especially in areas of localised and frequent heavy rain," he said.

"There is also high risk of flash flooding and flooding of low-lying areas with the forecasted rainy conditions for most of the week.

"It is noted that the high tide is predicted to exceed two metres this week, which will further increase the risk of flooding in low-lying areas and even catchment level because of back flow of water given that rain is predicted to continue for most parts of the country."

A heavy rain warning remains in force for Vanua Levu, Lau and Lomaiviti Group, Kadavu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, the eastern and interior parts of other larger islands.

A strong wind warning remains in force for all Fiji waters and a heavy rain alert is now in force for the rest of Fiji.

Mr Kumar said mariners could expect north to northeast wind of 20 to 25 knots, gusting to 35 knots with rough seas over Koro, northern Vanua Levu and Lau waters.

"For rest of Fiji waters, expect northerly wind 15 to 20 knots increasing to 20 to 25 knots with rough seas, poor visibility in areas of rain and thunderstorms.

"The current situation will be closely monitored and any alert and warning will be issued as and when appropriate. All communities are advised to remain updated with the latest weather information and take alerts and warnings seriously."
