Crossing concern

PARENTS in Vaivai, Lautoka, have raised serious concerns about the safety of their children after more than 40 children were forced to wait on one side of the Vaivai crossing because of flooding.

A parent who preferred to remain anonymous said the crossing posed a huge risk for children in the area.

"They waited from 4pm to 8pm on Monday before they could cross," she claimed.

"We have raised this issue with the Fiji Roads Authority and also with our rural advisory councillor and all they do is take pictures. They send contractors and they just fill the sides of the crossing with gravel and this gets washed away every time there is a lot of rain. The crossing needs to be elevated so that our children can travel safely across it."

FRA had earlier said the number of Irish crossings versus the available budget made it impossible to re-engineer all in the short to medium term.
