Villagers' help sought

THE search team involving police and military officers traditionally approached the vanua of Dogoru last night seeking their help to locate the missing Pacific Flying School Cessna 172 aircraft.

Led by Inspector Meli Matarugo, the team presented a sevusevu to the village elders seeking their forgiveness for not initially seeking permission to step into the vanua.

Insp Matarugo said the search teams went into the forest in the first instance, following emergency rules and regulations to save lives.

However, the search party felt it was right to seek the approval of the vanua to assist them with their search as the villagers knew the area of Delaikoro mountain range well.

The same traditional approach was done in the villages of Navakuru and Suweni as part of the community policing concept.

Northern divisional police commander SSP Verani Nakauyaca said when investigations took time in some instances, approaching the vanua for their help was useful.

On the use of drones to help in the search, he said the rainy weather was a hindrance.

Police have called on members of the public to stop spreading false information about sightings of the missing plane.

Chief operations officer Acting ACP Maretino Qiolevu said this caused the search parties to deviate from the search plans only to find the tips to be completely false.

"This is a difficult time for the families of the missing persons and spreading such information only leads to unnecessary distress and we ask members of the public to be mindful of their actions and the effect it has on the two loved ones' families," he said.
