A Message from Fiji Football Association president

Rajesh Patel

Greetings to all!

Welcome to our first edition of the GOAL Fiji newspaper.

We are proud and privileged to partner with Fiji's oldest newspaper The Fiji Times.

It is a new dawn for Fiji FA to partner with The Fiji Times, the oldest newspaper in Fiji. We have been here in football since 1938 and The Fiji Times had been here from 1869. It is a good beginning, maybe it is a little bit late, but it is never too late in life.

Media is a forum where it is never too late because the media and the information they impart in the world are very important.

Football fans can now follow us every Tuesday to read the full coverage of football matches from around the country.

It is going to be something different as we are committed to grow the game of football in the country.

We have our own two media officers who will be assisted by The Fiji Times team to produce this weekly GOAL Fiji newspaper.

Football in Fiji is taking its shape as we can see the game has been growing as we are working hard on development from the grassroots.

Recently we have been applauded for introducing Mum & Pop League for children from age 5-10 years. We started this 10-week program in Ba, Lautoka and Nadi and we will be moving around the country soon.

We are also proud to say we have handed our support to the Fiji Rugby Union in its bid to host the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in Fiji next year. We are delighted to support FRU in its bid and would assist them in every way.

We request our fans, players and district officials to support this bid and sign the petition.

This will not only help rugby union but also football as the stadium will be upgraded and we will be able to bid to host FIFA World Cup matches here.

This will also boost the economy of our country as well.

Looking at the National League, I would say we are having more than 24 matches every weekend. Our Vodafone Premier League is getting very competitive as well as our Vodafone Senior League.

The Vodafone U19 Youth League started two weeks ago in the boys' division and U18 Vodafone Girls league kicked off last weekend.

Our Vodafone U16 boys and girls league are being played every weekend which are very competitive.

Our selectors are on the field to scout potential players to represent the country in both male and female teams for the OFC Championships and FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

Nevertheless you can grab a copy of Tuesday's The Fiji Times to check out our weekly news as we raise the standard of football in the country together with The Fiji Times on GOAL Fiji.
