Northland stops Navua in girls' under-18 opener

NORTHLAND Tailevu and Navua claimed victories in the opening round of the 2018 Vodafone U18 Girls Southern division league at the Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) Academy ground in Vatuwaqa last weekend.

Navua beat Nasinu 2-0 while Northland Tailevu edged Suva 2-1.

Deepak Lal, a Northland Tailevu football association official, said they were keen to develop women's football in their district.

"In recent years we had a few players in the national women's team and we would like to see more players make it to that level. We are providing our senior coaches to assist the U18 team and in a bid to develop women's soccer in our district," Lal said.

Former national women's rep Titilia Dugu, who is also the Suva U18 secretary, believes this sort of competition is positive for the sport.

"Hundred per cent of the players in our team are students not only from the Suva area but we have some who travel from Nausori as well.

"Every time we train, we tell the players to learn to progress as that is the only way they will know they are learning something. We have young new players compared with last year. With the girls, they have long way to go with the help of the development officers, parents being supportive, Suva should be competitive," she said.

Former Suva rep Inosi Cava is assisting the Suva side.
